After forty-five years of service in Boston’s criminal division, Mickey Cochrane intended to enjoy his retirement in his hometown of Bridgewater, just a few miles away. It was an opportunity to reconnect with childhood friends, to put the world to rights over a beer, and above all to devote himself fully to his passion for baseball. Fate, however, had other plans. Shortly after his arrival, the Bridgewater Bears were set to play in the final of the Massachusetts Collegiate Baseball Championship—against their long-standing and bitter rivals, the Salem State Vikings, promising a game charged with tension. So charged, in fact, that when a Bears player is found dead, brutally mutilated in what was until then a quiet, unassuming town, the local sheriff turns to Mickey for advice—bringing his all too fresh retirement to an end.
